UKRAINE : Cherkasy
Rev. Barbara Leger, Spiritual Leader

Rev. Barbara Leger was catapulted into ministry in Cherkasy, Ukraine by arriving on September 11, 2001. “ After 5.5 years, I am beginning to understand Spirit’s guidance, the Ukrainian culture and my purpose and personal mission is clear: I am a presence of love and a voice for freedom through the path of consciousness. It is my spiritual growth that keeps me here as I receive as much or more as my students in our deep exploration of the Science of Mind and Spirit. I deeply regret not being more of a part of the lives of my family and friends in the US, yet there is a knowing that I must do this. I ask for your continued prayers, belief, attention and financial support as we grow this amazing spiritual community in Ukraine.”

Barbara now has 102 students enrolled in 11 different classes in 3 cities, does practitioner work mostly with her 12 practitioner students, manages her growing staff and does a weekly lecture and young adult group. She teaches 22 nights and 5 full days a month, traveling every weekend to Crimea or Kiev. She says that she really needs guest teachers!! She is so happy that Spiritual Leader and Practitioner, Sasha Tensin, from Russia, arrived this week for a 6 month stay. Soon he will take two of these groups as they complete Financial Freedom and go on to his Practical Mysticism. Also in March, Rev. Liz Mirante from Seattle area arrives for a 3 month stay. She will offer Spiritual Practices to two of the three Foundation groups now completing, she will likely be doing some counseling and perhaps a workshop or two.

At this time last year Barbara was asking for someone to come who can take leadership in operations and organization. Happily she reports that, on the recommendation of John and Barbara Waterhouse, UCSL ministers in Ashville NC, Betse Griffith arrived in early Sept this past fall with her dog and cat and fully intends to stay for two years. Betse is such great support and everyone at TEMENOS is grateful for her participation.

If you are an experienced teacher with 3 weeks to 3 months to give, our Ukraine SOM community offers a cozy apartment, personal cook, translators, exceptional students, travel in an amazing and beautiful country, lots of personal growth in a loving environment, and even a tiny stipend. Please visit our websites and fill out an application found on the US managed site at www.ukrainescienceofmind.org and be sure to go to the Ukraine managed site at www.scienceofmind.org.ua to see the latest pictures and news of our community. We are so grateful to a major donor whose gift we earmarked for the expansion of education department.

The fourth annual SOM Conference will be held Oct 1-7th and this year’s theme is mysticism and inner dialogue and tentative title is: AWAKENING: The Path of the Everyday Mystic. As always, Americans are invited to participate in this transformational conference, and will leave on Sept 23rrd for pre-conference tour and relaxation returning to the US on October 8th. Details will soon be on both websites. The big news is that NEALE DONALD WALSCH will be presenting for the first two and a half days, providing an intimate setting for deep dialogues and exploring the landscape of the inner mystic. Ask anyone who has been to a conference and they will tell you – IT IS LIFE CHANGING, SO LOVING, JOYFUL, FUN, AND DEEPLY CONNECTING US TO OURSELVES, EACH OTHER AND THE AMAZING SETTING ANCHORS US IN EARTH’S BEAUTY.

Rev. Barbara’s center introduced Thanksgiving Day and the practice of gratitude to Ukraine – this year 150 came to sit down dinner; World Peace Meditation and other special ceremonies continue. The group has translated and published 7 books, the entire 2 year Practitioner curriculum and the original textbook is in edit and review process. In addition, they have produced a line of spiritual products, beginning with the “Inspiration Cards” with Ernest Holmes quotes and student affirmations, a quarterly SOM journal, a yearly calendar and most recently ‘Images of Ukraine’ sets of cards and envelopes using photos of our country taken by a young adult and last but not least, the youth journal ‘Rhythms of Life’, which was produced by and for young adults.

The highest priorities on her wish list are guest teachers and funding! Costs for rentals, travel and transportation have risen approximately 300% this year and time for fundraising is diminishing with such full workload. She also needs computers, office technology, video equipment, help with grant writing and PR/Marketing for USA and volunteers in the US who can work with specific projects and initiatives now underway or waiting on deck.
